After watching my mother bake loaves of bread, and other Trinidadian inspired desserts for multiple members of her family, I realized that many of those dessert recipes would be lost, eventually. She was the only one who would make them. I thought maybe I could just buy them from local places in NYC, but having had store bought versions of those desserts, I decided that somebody in my generation should learn how to make them all.
Initially, was simply going to video-document her preparing and making typical Trinidadian and Trinidadian inspired East Indian desserts. After the first one, Gulab Jamun (our version), I decided that it was so much fun, that I not only wanted to document everything, but also learn how to do it myself and be great at it.
As I learnt from her and other Aunts and Uncles (for the ones she did not know), I started to create versions with different flavors…my interpretation of what they could or should be like. Eventually I wanted to share the original and modified versions with non-trinis, and thought I should do a Pop-up event. After the first event and positive feedback/reactions on the flavors and uniqueness, Baked Trindian was born.
As of now, I continue to do pop-up events and do not offer products online, but it may be a possibility in the future. So, stay tuned for the next event and updates.
